Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.  This is one resting place of an unknown soldier (actually three, one from WW I, WWII, and the Korean Conflict, that does get quite a few visits.

Iwo Jima Memorial.  It was much larger than I expected.

From the information board, “Shortly after the raising of the first flag, another patrol was sent to raise a larger flag that would be visible over the entire island.  As the second group hoisted this flag, Associated Press Photographer Joe Rosenthal captured the moment on film.   For Marines on the battlefield, the two flag raisings gave hope for a quick victory.  However, the determined Japanese only dug deeper and would fight tenaciously for another month.”

You can see both Iwo Jima flags at the National Museum of the Marine Corps in Quantico, VA. A fabulous museum, well worth the visit, and it's free!

Arlington is a moving place, glad you got to see it.

It is a very special place. While stationed in DC, I attended a number of funerals representing the Coast Guard. They do a great job there!
