Today was a day of driving on several named highways in Alaska, a few miles on the Tok Cutoff, a few more miles on the Glenn Highway to Glennallen, then the Richardson Hwy and lastly the Edgerton Hwy to Chitina where we are parked for the next two nights at the Wrangell View Mt. Park for $15/night for electric.
Our drive today was broken up by a stop at the visitor Center of the Wrangell-St Elias National Park and Preserve. This park is huge, encompasses over 13 million acres, the largest national park and larger than Vermont, New Hampshire and Rhode Island combined!! Yes, I did get my Passport book stamped!
Our Milepost guide tells us at this point on the Edgerton Hwy to watch for falling rock from cliffs above, they were right.
The Milepost also warned about the Liberty Creek Bridge – 8 Ton weight limit, yikes 8 ton, we weigh about 16 ton! We decided to just approach and see, well no sign was posted about weight so we scurried across. I do think that bit of info from the Milepost needed to have been deleted before this year’s publishing, looks like a new bridge.
View of the Copper River and fireweed in the foreground.
This evening the skies cleared revealing view after view from our RV site. Spectacular!! We think this is Mt. Wrangell.
Tomorrow we are exploring the mining towns of McCarthy and Kennicott, 60 miles from here driving on an old railway bed, plus driving over the Kuskulana Bridge, a former RR bridge built 1910, 525 feet long and 238 feet over the river, that should be exiting!
