We were fortunate to get reservations at the City of Houghton RV Park, then to top it all off, by moving a few spaces, were able to extend here over the holiday weekend.
This snow level pole shows at the top the level of snow during the winter of 1978-79 – 390.4”
The Eagle Harbor Lighthouse.
Experimenting with charcoal cooking, this split fryer was delicious.
The Copper Range Historical Museum in Chassell was quite interesting. The volunteer was very enthusiastic making it was fun to listen to her tell about growing up in this town.
Below are many attempts to create a better egg beater, quite interesting.
This coat served his owner well, so many patches sewn on as there was no money to buy a replacement one.
A bill for an appendectomy done in 1937, 13 day hospital stay at $1.50/day!
Thursday, Sept 1st was moving day for us, Bob drove and I walked. We moved from site 9 to site 4, and now we can stay here for the Labor Day weekend.
After getting set up, we headed off to tour the Quincy Mine. The #2 shaft went down 9,260’, almost two miles. The man car (on the right) carried 30 men to their work area for their 12 hour shift. The water tank car (on the left) would be used to dewater the mine.
Another tidbit of info about a huge copper mass.
I did find the copper specimen I wanted! It was on display at the Seaman Mineral Museum in Houghton. Wonderful place.
On a drive we came upon this behemoth. Notice the “No Trespassing” sign Bob has passed making a bee line to check out this dredger. Usually he is more mindful of those signs. He said he just wanted to touch it,
and he did.
We helped this young couple with two kids in the SUV, load back up some siding that had slid off the trailer. They were very thankful, we just told them now they have a ‘great story’ to tell their friends. We once had a tour guide in Europe, and that was his deal, if something doesn’t go as you hoped it would, it then makes a great story!
Do you believe the size of these fungi (the internet says “Both fungi and funguses can be used as the plural for fungus.”) I have never seen anything like this before.
You can’t go to Gay Michigan and see this sign without the obligatory photo!
Tomorrow, Sept 5th, we are headed north to Copper Harbor’s Fort Wilkins SP.

Those hand-held snow removal devices are just not going to hack it with all that snow. Oh wait, those are egg beaters!
Nice spot you had there at the campground ... those snow totals are incredible.
That's a lot of snow to shovel! You better get outta there quick before you get stuck.
I've seen fungi that big before, it inhabited my gym locker in high school.
I think you need to get a shorter leash for Bob, passing that "No Trespassing" sign. I'm amazed at how he took that picture of himself touching the dredge...
It is always great if you can move just a few spaces over and stay through a holiday weekend! Less stress!
Is that another lighthouse you would like to host at?! :)
There are so many things to see up there, thanks for sharing!
